State averages mix in local rates; edit to your exact county/city rate.
Add sales tax: pre-tax price ร (1 + rate). Back out: if you know a tax-inclusive total, divide it by (1 + rate) to get the pre-tax amount; tax = total โ pre-tax. USA sales tax is collected by yet another layer of state and local rules โ check your nexus and local rates.
How US sales tax works
Tax = Pre-tax amount times combined rate (state plus local). Rates vary by state from 0% to over 10%. Some items are exempt. Remote sellers must collect tax in states where they have nexus (physical or economic presence).
Frequently asked questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by 1 plus the rate as a decimal. For 8.25%, multiply by 1.0825. A $100 item becomes $108.25.
How do I get tax out of an already-taxed total?
Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. A $108.25 total at 8.25% has $100 pre-tax and $8.25 of tax.
